Education

We often do demonstrations in and around the metro area at schools and community groups. Each demonstration includes a talk from a volunteer or staff member at Kaarakin and a live black cockatoo to interact with.

Schools

Want to prepare your school for a visit from us? Download the fact sheets for each species (coming soon!).We come to your classroom and a talk to your class (including question time) generally lasts about 30-60 minutes depending on the age of the students. Each session links in with the Australian curriculum in biological sciences.

There are also free downloadable cockatoo related activities and lesson ideas available, designed to be supplemented with a visit from Kaarakin. Cockatoo Capers, Cockatoo Chorus, Cockatoo Comparisons, Cockatoo Cuisine and Cockatoo Technology are available to teachers for no charge. Please download and spread the word about these freebies! We also appreciate any feedback on the activities and ideas – email our Education Officer.

Colouring in sheets are available here as well. Created by the Urban Bushland Council, you can download and distribute these as long as you credit their makers.

Community Groups

Are you a member of scouts, a ‘friend’s of’ group, an environmental club or similar? We can do static displays at shows and conferences, or a focus talk at a monthly meeting. Just contact our Education Officer to discuss dates and what you need.
