Our animal friends

All black cockatoos at Kaarakin are rescued birds, some have a more colourful past than others. These friendly black cockatoos all have interesting stories on how they came to Kaarakin.

Chasey the Carnaby′s Cockatoo

Chasey is the star of the show, he even has his own twitter feed! He was hit by a car when he was quite young and lost part of his wing as a result. He was rehabilitated at Kaarakin and has formed a strong bond with our vet nurse Lou. Because he can’t fly, he can never be released into the wild – but this doesn’t stop him getting into mischief by climbing around stealing people’s pens and jewellery.

Missy the Red Tail

Missy has a great personality with a particular liking for your buttons! She was found by a member of the public in their back yard being attacked by ravens and brought to Kaarakin for treatment. On intial assessment, it was clear she’d been someone’s pet – she was affectionate and quite tame. She had no microchip, and after doorknocking the neighbourhood no owner could be found, so she became part of the Education Team. It is thought that she was an illegally kept pet, and had been poached from the wild as a chick.

Harmony the Carnaby′s Cockatoo

Harmony and her sibling Rapsody were hit by a car as fledging chicks. Due to permenent ligament damange Harmony can’t fly. But if you can provide enough gum nuts, banksia, she oak, etc; she will happily sit and eat them in front of a class full of kids, a corporate group…you name it! Just NEVER take her food!!

Rex the Baudin

Rex was hit by a car when she was very young and sustained multiple wing injuries, resulting in her inability to fly. She arrived at Kaarakin with her best friend “Muffy”, a Major Mitchell cockatoo. Rex and Muffy have earned a reputation for being escape artists, and there was more than one morning when they first arrived, when Kaarakin team members had discovered them out of their cage!
